Assertiveness Wheel: 8 Key Skills for Building Confidence and Reducing Stress

Assertiveness Wheel: 8 Key Skills for Building Confidence and Reducing Stress 🌟

One of the most useful and effective tools in coaching and team work, including with Insights Discovery. That’s what my clients say. Let me explain why! 🤔

Assertiveness is more than just speaking our mind. It’s the ability to express ourselves clearly, firmly, and respectfully—both toward ourselves and others. 🙌❤️ It consists of eight key skills that make up the so-called “assertiveness wheel.” Each of these elements helps us tackle challenges, reduce stress, and build better relationships at work and in everyday life. 👥 Let’s explore each of these skills!

1.Saying No – The Art of Setting Boundaries 🚧

The ability to say “no” is invaluable when we want to manage our time and avoid overload. When we say “no,” we do so with respect for ourselves and others, setting clear boundaries to avoid feeling overwhelmed. 😌

Example: You have a full schedule, and a colleague asks for help with an additional project. By assertively declining, you can express your willingness to assist at a later time or help find someone else who might be available.

2.Asking – Expressing Your Needs 🙏

Asking for help or resources is essential to effectively manage your responsibilities. Assertively asking is a way of expressing your needs without fear or uncertainty—honestly, but respectfully. 📋

Example: When you need additional information to complete a task, assertively requesting it makes work easier for both parties and builds open, supportive communication.

3.Owning Your Mistakes – Building Authenticity 🤝

Assertiveness is also about taking responsibility for your actions. Admitting mistakes without excuses shows confidence and a willingness to learn—an important step in building trust and authenticity. 🌱

Example: If you made a mistake on a project, assertively acknowledging it and offering to correct it reinforces your credibility and helps solve the issue without unnecessary tension.

4.Talking About Your Successes – Sharing Achievements 🏆

Assertiveness also involves openly speaking about your successes. This isn’t bragging—it’s sharing your achievements and inspiring others to pursue their goals. ✨

Example: You completed an important project with outstanding results. Assertively discussing your success can spark interest and inspire the team to take on similar projects.

5.Responding to Criticism – Staying Calm 😌

Constructive criticism is a natural part of growth, but handling it can be challenging. An assertive response to criticism allows you to listen with openness and respond without defensiveness. 🎧

Example: When you receive critical feedback, instead of becoming defensive, an assertive approach allows you to view the situation from a new perspective and gain valuable insights.

6.Responding to Compliments – Accepting Recognition 🌼

Assertiveness also involves the ability to receive praise with gratitude. Instead of downplaying your achievements, you can accept compliments with pride, boosting your self-esteem. 💖

Example: When a colleague compliments your accomplishments, assertively saying “Thank you, it means a lot” allows you to fully appreciate the recognition and strengthens mutual respect.

7.Expressing Negative Feelings – Honesty without Aggression 💬

Assertiveness gives us the courage to express negative emotions in a controlled and calm way. It allows us to be honest without escalating conflicts and to maintain full control over our emotions. ⚖️

Example: If you feel frustrated due to project delays, assertively expressing these feelings can help resolve the issue before it becomes a major conflict.

8.Expressing Positive Feelings – Building Relationships 🤗

Expressing positive emotions is equally important. It lets others know we appreciate their efforts and helps create an atmosphere of support and understanding. 🌈

Example: You want to show appreciation for a colleague’s support with a difficult task. Tell them! An assertive compliment boosts morale and strengthens a sense of community within the team.
